Tour of Lawrence Results...

The Chamois Butt’r Cycling Team attended the Inaugural Tour of Lawrence www.touroflawrence.com this past weekend. The team had 3 team members in the Master’s 40+, 50+ Downtown Criterium on Saturday, Curt Shelman paced the team with a 3rd place finish in the 50+ division. Greg Reed and Trey Harrison each took several turns off the front of the field, with the announcer, John Lefler calling out the Chamois Butt’r Team several times in recognition of their efforts. In the closing moments of the 45 minute race Trey Harrison was instrumental in escorting Shelman up toward the front of the field, where Shelman narrowly avoided a mishap on the final ½ lap but was able to recover without going down and held on for his placing.

The Sunday Circuit Race was held on the Campus of Kansas University on a selective 4.5 mile loop with 500 feet of climbing per lap event. The 3 team members from Saturday were joined by a 4th team member, Dr. Keck Hartman. The course was well suited to the climbing talents of Trey Harrison as he found himself in a 5 man breakaway on the second lap with the winner from the day before, David Hejduk, 360 Racing and wearing the “Stars and Bars” of his recent USA Cycling Master’s Nationals Road Race Championship, Jannie Hamalainen, Tulsa Tough. The final steep climb up to the College President’s home proved to be the final selection with Hamalainen escaping for the win and Hedjuk using his superior sprint over Harrison for second place. Greg Reed and Keck Hartman spent the day in a chase group of 9 riders, with Reed managing to place 10th overall and 3rd in the 50+ Group, with Hartman right behind for 4th in the 50+ and Shelman next rider in the 50+ group to finish for 5th place.

The Tour of Lawrence was an exciting event for the racers and fans alike. The Chamois Butt’r Cycling Team went home with 3 spots on the podium for the weekend and are looking forward to the next races on the Kansas Cycling Association Calendar! www.kscycling.org
